Apple had another HUGE quarter and managed to beat Wall Street's expectations by boasting $58 billion in revenue. We should note that these numbers did not include the new MacBook, which was released earlier this month or the newly-released Apple Watch, which went on sale just last week. A closer look at the numbers shows that iPad sales were nearly half of what they were in the same quarter last year, even the sexy new iPad Air 2 flattening out. The true star of the Apple lineup continued to be the iPhone, particularly the company's newly engorged line of iPhone 6s. Last quarter, the new iPhones helped the company to finally dethrone the former king of plus-sized phones, Samsung in global sales.
This past quarter, Apple sold a whopping 61 million iPhones, compared to a measly 43.7 million for the same quarter last year. However, the real big story may be that for the first time Apple has sold more iPhones in China than in the U.S. Now, this was surely helped by the fact that this past quarter included the Chinese New Year, which is that billion-plus nation's big gifting holiday. iPhone sales were up in "developing markets" around the world, but were particularly strong in China where sales were up 71% to a total of $16.8 billion. This is an interesting trend to watch. Over the next few years, the booming middle class in China will arguably be the most important market in the world--particularly for gadget manufacturers like Apple. We may soon see the tech industry build its release schedule not around the U.S.' holiday season, but around the Chinese new year. This is just a new reality we will have to get used to.
