Hands-on with Playdate: An indie portable created for indie games

In 2019, we first saw the indie handheld Playdate. The device, created by Mac software companies Panic and Teenage Engineering, has been delayed by the epidemic and supply concerns, but it is finally nearing availability. This is a very specialized product, a small gameboy-esque console built on a crank that will sell for $179 and come with a regular stream of 24 independent games, two each week, with additional "seasons" possible. It's pricey and rather impractical, but it's also delightful? We like it a lot.
