** Update at ~7 hours 30 minutes: turns out, you can't livestream for more than 8 hours. But our iPhone 7 is still chugging along. At this point, we've decided it deserves to survive. Here endeth the swim test. iPhone 7: Passed.

** Update at ~6 hours 50 minutes: with only 14% battery life, we decided to try to plug the phone in. We allowed the bottom section of the phone to breach the surface long enough to displace the water in the port with isopropyl alcohol and dry. We then plugged in the charging cable—with its tip covered in petroleum jelly to allow as little exposure to the water as possible. We submerged the device—and it's happily charging. Do not try this at home.

We’re going to drop an iPhone 7 into our fish tank to see how long it survives—for science. Apple has listed the phone as IP67 water resistant, which should mean that it can survive at one meter underwater for up to half an hour. How long will it last in our tank? Only the timer will tell!

We also recently completed teardowns of all the new Apple devices which you can browse here while you wait for this iPhone to drown:
