Most windshields are simply secured in place using glue. Adhesive has the potential to be highly powerful, particularly when put in a clean environment. Skyscraper windows are actually held in with 3M VHB, and enclosed trailer sides can easily be attached using this method alone. When using proper adhesives, you can build things almost indefinitely. Let's not forget that mortar is at its core an adhesive linking concrete blocks together and has seen homes standing on these foundations for generations. You can have bad adhesives and bad installs which can lead to failure or you can try to have adhesive hold beyond its limits.
