PCMag Live for Thursday, April 24, 2014 is hosted by Max Eddy and Jill Duffy.
In our Headline News segment, the Wall Street Journal claims to have a scoop that the Feds are about to kill Net Neutrality. Allegedly the FCC's plan would let websites pay broadband providers for "preferential treatment." FCC would apparently judge these situations on a case-by-case basis. See you later Internet, it was fun while you lasted.
Also in the news, Apple continues to make a lot of money! The latest quarterly earnings report was released yesterday and Apple saw a 7% increase in quarterly profits. The iPhone is still their biggest piece of the revenue pie and the most profitable major product line. Also surprising nobody, they announced that they will have new products in 2014.
Lastly, Google Maps has added a new "time machine" function to their popular Big Brother map application. They've been capturing photos of every inch of the Earth for seven years. Now you can see how places have changed over time with a handy scroll function. Watch the Freedom Tower rise in New York City! See Japan devastated right before your eyes! Watch the house you grew up get new aluminum siding!
Today's Reader Question is Mike in Peoria who asks "You guys are always telling me to use password managers, but how can I make them work with my apps?" Good question Mike, good thing Max is here to drop knowledge.
The One Cool Thing today is a neat home automation system called the SmartThings Hub. The SmartThings Hub lets you control ZigBee, Z-Wave, and Wi-Fi home-automation devices from your iOS or Android smartphone. It's a snap to install, is relatively inexpensive, and works with IFTTT recipes, and its burgeoning developer community gives it an edge over the competition.
