PCMag Live for Tuesday, April 29 is hosted by Alex Colon and Dan Costa.
In our Headline News segment, Dan and Alex talk about the good news that AT&T is building a 4G LTE network in the sky. Finally there will be a competitor to the often derided GoGo in-flight WiFi. AT&T plans to build an entirely new air-to-ground network that will be operational at the end of 2015. There aren't many details about the technology it will use, but AT&T says it will be the same LTE standard it uses on the ground today. More to come as this story develops.
Also in the news, a faster Netflix is coming to Verizon customers. This is the second deal Netflix has signed with an ISP, the first was with Comcast two months ago. Netflix will pay Verizon for direct access through the carrier's network to improve streaming quality. Netflix already has an Open Connect program that lets ISPs connect directly to improve streaming quality. But will this added cost of doing business mean higher subscription rates for Netflix's customers?
Lastly in the news, Apple quietly released a new MacBook Air. The new laptop runs on Intel's latest Haswell Architecture -- 1.3Ghz to 1.4GHz Core i5. There is a 11 inch model that starts at $899 and a 13 inch at $999. It boasts a longer battery life: 2 additional hours for the 13 inch, 1 hour for the 11 inch. The new MacBook Air still has 4GB of RAM instead of 8 and no Thunderbolt 2.
Today's Reader Question is from Murray who asks via email "For people who are holding onto XP, is Linux a good alternative?"
The One Cool Thing today is the Porkfolio connected piggy bank. Yup. It's a smartbank for kids. It's a cool way for parents to teach kids about saving money.
