Threadripper is HERE (well almost), the 32 core 64 threaded 2990WX power house CPU will be released on the 13th of August and coming in at $1799 USD, which is still under that of Intel's flagship 7980xe. There are also different model SKUs being introduced with a 2970WX with 24 cores / 48 threads, and replacements to the existing line up for 2950X and 2920X CPUs to have 12 and 16 cores respectively. The X399 motherboards will also be reused, so all you have to do is update them and you are good to go!
