When it launches in late 2024, NASA's Artemis program will be a watershed moment in US space flight history. It will not only be the first time American astronauts have traveled beyond LEO since the 1970s, but it will also be the first time a female astronaut has set foot on the moon. The Artemis mission will lay the basis for humanity to continue exploring and potentially colonizing our nearest celestial neighbor, as well as act as a launching pad for our journey to Mars. Given how hostile space is to human physiology and psyche, NASA and its partners will have a difficult time keeping their astronauts alive.
