Amazon and Microsoft both failed in phones this year. We found that out yesterday when both companies reported their quarterly earnings. Amazon had to write down 100 and 70 million dollars worth of unsold Fire Phones, which smacks of Microsoft’s Kin phone disaster a few years ago. Microsoft’s Surface Pro tablet sales are up, but Windows Phone is still struggling along under 5% market share in the U.S.
