In this discussion series about Fixing for Change-we are joined by 3 authors whose work focuses on how to transition to a more sustainable and equitable pattern of consumption.

Sandra Goldmark is a theatrical designer and professor whose work focusses on circular economy solutions to overconsumption and climate change. She is an Associate Professor of Professional Practice and Director of Campus Sustainability and Climate Action at Barnard College. She is a co-author of the Sustainable Production Toolkit, and the co-founder of Fixup, a seven-year series of short term repair shops for household items of all kinds. At Fixup, she and her team repaired thousands of broken objects ranging from lamps to chairs to stuffed lobsters and chi revitalizers, and diverted tens of thousands of pounds of waste. Sandra is the author of a new book called Fixation: How to Have Stuff without Breaking the Planet.

John Wackman describes himself the "coordinator, communicator and cheerleader" for Repair Cafes in the Hudson Valley of New York--and for the repair movement globally. His first career was in television, and he recognized an overlap with the skill sets needed to start a community repair initiative: bringing together people with diverse backgrounds to work on a common vision. An amateur woodworker since he was a kid, John brings his tools to as many Repair Cafes as he can, and he's become a true believer that "repairing in community is powerful." He is the author, with Elizabeth Knight, of Repair Revolution: How Fixers Are Transforming Our Throwaway Culture.

Andy Russell is co-author, with Lee Vinsel, of The Innovation Delusion: How Our Obsession with the New Has Disrupted the Work that Matters Most. Andy is a Professor of History and Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at SUNY Polytechnic Institute. He is the author of numerous articles and books about the history of the Internet, computing, and modular systems. Five or six years ago, after getting fed up with the vacuous jargon of “innovation-speak,” Andy & Lee started writing about maintenance and organizing conferences and communities around the notion that maintainers—not innovators—are the unsung heroes of our technological society. The Innovation Delusion, published in September 2020, is one outcome of their collaboration.
